REDUCE LATENCY AND INCREASE CACHE HITS WITH REGIONAL TIERED CACHE

Tier cache allows users to organize Cloudflare data centers into tiers, where only high tiers can request content from origin servers, and send content to lower tier servers closer to customers. Cloudflare adds a regional tier in between low and high tiers so low tiers can request content from regional tier before high tiers. This reduces the number of requests to high tiers, resulting in lower origin load and overall latency. Overall there's an average of 50-100ms improvement in tail cache hits using regional cache tiers.

SCAR TISSUES MAKE RELATIONSHIPS WEAR OUT

This is a short transcript of a talk given by Professor John Ousterhout at Stanford. He talks about how it is really hard to build relationships that last for a long time. Professional relationships don’t last long because of “scar tissue” that builds up over time. In non-professional relationships, usually you can sit down and talk about things to prevent this build up, but in professional relationships, that opportunity usually doesn’t come around.

YOU DON'T ALWAYS NEED INDEXES

Sometimes you have a lot of data. One approach to support quick searches is pre-processing it to build an index so a search can involve only looking at a small fraction of the total data. The threshold at which it's worth switching to indexing, though, might be higher than you'd guess. Unless you know from the start that you'll be searching hundreds of millions of records, consider starting with simple scans and only add indexing if you can't get acceptable performance. And even then, if queries are rare and highly varied it may still be better to do the work at query time instead of ingestion time.
