Google may soon just tell users what's on the Internet instead of showing them. The company is expanding its AI search features and testing a more substantial change in the form of AI Mode - a version of Google that will only show AI results. Google insists that helping people discover content online remains central to its approach, but AI Mode won't show organic results - it is designed to operate in a conversational way, so users will have to refine their search or ask follow-up questions. The experimental feature is only available for Google One AI Premium subscribers.

It was 18,700 days, or 51 years, between the time when the Apollo 17 mission landed on the Moon and when Intuitive Machines' Nova-C Odysseus lander did on February 22, 2024. While Intuitive Machines' lander top toppled over, it still completed most of its scientific experiments. Firefly's Blue Ghost stuck its landing last weekend, making it two landings in slightly more than a year. Intuitive Machines plans to send a second Nova-C lander, Athena, to the Moon this afternoon - if successful, that would be three US landers in 377 days.
Robot surgeries account for around 22% of surgeries nowadays. The method offers less bleeding, less time in the hospital, and faster recovery time with less pain. These robots are machines operated by highly trained and experienced surgeons that remotely operate arms that hold tiny surgical instruments. Using robots allows surgeons to comfortably maneuver in places that are otherwise quite restrictive. The technology is not only becoming more widespread, it is also becoming more advanced - it may be possible one day to have robots operating independently.

The Aider CLI Python utility uses an innovative solution to help end users install it in an isolated virtual environment without first needing to teach them what an 'isolated virtual environment' is. It uses the uv Rust binary to install aider-chat, which in turn installs a brand-new standalone copy of Python 3.12 and puts it into uv's own managed directory structure where it shouldn't hurt anything else. There's more to it, and more advanced users may opt for an alternative installation mechanism, but the pattern is a very tasteful way of getting everything working for non-expert Python users with minimal risk of breaking their systems.
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian is helping Digg make a comeback. Ohanian and Digg founder Kevin Rose have acquired the platform for an undisclosed sum. The platform will prioritize transparency, reward human effort, and foster enriching discussions. It will not just be a Digg or Reddit clone.
Columbia University student Roy Lee managed to land internships at Amazon, Meta, and TikTok using a simple AI program. He had originally planned to get a degree to work in Big Tech, but training for technical interviews killed his passion for the job, which led him to create the program. Columbia University has scheduled a disciplinary hearing for Lee's stunt, but he will not be attending - Lee plans to leave the university, saying that the program he built is proof that the jobs Big Tech are offering are becoming obsolete.
Blue Origin employees say they are moving to a permanent 50-hour workweek with frequent 12-hour shifts and that badge scanners have been introduced to track employee time.
Some people desperately want large language models to be a bigger deal than what they are, but these people seem to be sailing against the winds of evidence.

The Pixel 10 series will be released later this year.
Colossal Biosciences has genetically engineered mice to have mammoth-like fur using CRISPR. The mices' fur is of a color, texture, and thickness that resembles a mammoth's fur. The woolly coat may enable the mice to survive in cold climates. While the company believes that it will be eventually possible to re-create the woolly mammoth, there are still a lot of technical hurdles ahead.
Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost has successfully demonstrated the ability to use Earth-based GPS signals on the Moon. Accurate and reliable navigation will be vital for future missions to the Moon. NASA currently tracks spacecraft using a mix of onboard sensors and Earth-based tracking signals, which generally requires oversight from a team of engineers. Using GNSS could reduce the need for human operators as the signals can be autonomously picked up by spacecraft.
Arch Gateway handles the critical but pesky tasks related to the handling and processing of prompts, including detecting and rejecting jailbreak attempts, intent-based routing for improved task accuracy, mapping user requests into 'backend' functions, and managing the observability of prompts and LLM API calls in a centralized way. Several demo apps, as well as a quick start guide, are available in the repository.
The US is unique in having a tier above Big Tech. Across the UK, India, and the Netherlands, the highest compensation is Big Tech, but in the US, hedge funds, quant firms, and top scaleups can pay more. However, these positions are usually reserved for workers already in Big Tech, and switching can be difficult. It's a lot harder now to get into top-tier companies in today's tough job market.
Matt Mullenweg intends to stay as CEO at Automattic, but he's been thinking of a succession plan for the company. Mullenweg doesn't want to pass WordPress onto a committee but rather to another CEO who will continue to act as a steward to the WordPress community. He says the most 'iconic' companies are those where the executive has retained some majority in voting control, something he is considering in his succession planning. Automattic has helped boost the adoption of WordPress by introducing more than 100 million people to the software.
Waymo has officially launched driverless taxis in Texas with the help of Uber. People in Austin can now take a driverless Waymo robotaxi using the Uber app. The launch comes as Tesla is expected to debut Unsupervised Full Self-Driving services in the city later this year. There will be no additional costs for accessing Waymo robotaxis. Riders will be able to use the Uber app to unlock the vehicle, open the trunk, and activate the trip.

Sequencing-by-expansion is a new proprietary method that pulls apart DNA molecules and amplifies the signal of each individual base, allowing scientists to avoid the time requirements of cycle-based sequencing as well as the comparable difficulties in distinguishing true signals among the noise. The technology is still in development and not yet commercially available, but it could one day be suitable for whole genome and exome sequencing as well as parsing RNA. The science behind the technology represents a significant breakthrough that addresses the limitations of existing sequencing solutions. It has the potential to revolutionize the use of sequencing in research and healthcare.

Yoke is a project that takes the idea of Infrastructure as Code to the next level. It allows developers to write infrastructure definitions in Go or Rust, compile them to WebAssembly, and then take input and output from Kubernetes manifests that get applied to the cluster. Yoke has a feature called Air Traffic Control, which is a Kubernetes operator that lets developers define infrastructure as CustomResourceDefinitions - the data in the CustomResource is passed into the Flight you associate with it, and the Flight generates the manifests that get applied to the cluster. Air Traffic Control makes deploying things to clusters easier than ever.
Klarna shut down around 1,200 SaaS a year ago as it had developed an internal tech stack that brought data and knowledge together, resulting in serious productivity gains. The company found it was able to use AI to quickly deploy new interfaces and interactions. There was no longer any need for it to continue with a lot of its SaaS as the tech stack allowed it to consolidate its technology and knowledge and remove the silos. Besides the savings, Klarna gained the unification and standardization of its knowledge and data.
