HUMANOID ROBOTS ARE LOUSY CO-WORKERS. CHINA WANTS TO BE FIRST TO CHANGE THAT

Chinese startup UBTech is training human-like robots to sort auto parts and move containers. The AI-powered robots can work with other robots and figure out on their own how to get the job done - and also learn how to do it better. It currently takes two of UBTech's robots around 12 seconds to load a container onto a truck together, compared to three seconds for human workers, but the robots are expected to get faster and they can work around the clock. The startup plans to deliver 500 to 1,000 of its robots to clients this year.

GEMINI 2.5 PRO VS. CLAUDE 3.7 SONNET: CODING COMPARISON

Gemini 2.5 Pro, an experimental thinking model from Google, has become the talk of the town since its release. It is better at coding, has a one million token context window, and it's free. While Claude's 3.7 Sonnet is not that far behind, at this point, there's no point in using it over Gemini 2.5 Pro. Gemini 2.5 Pro has now taken the lead as the default answer to every model comparison.

THE SECRETS AND MISDIRECTION BEHIND SAM ALTMAN'S FIRING FROM OPENAI

OpenAI was set up to be a different kind of tech company from the start - one governed by a nonprofit board with a duty not to the shareholders, but to humanity. Altman was quickly reinstated after it was clear that the only way to keep the company from imploding was to bring him back. This article tells the inside story in detail.

FIRST THERAPY CHATBOT TRIAL YIELDS MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Dartmouth researchers have published the results of the first-ever clinical trial of a generative AI-powered therapy chatbot. The software resulted in significant improvement in participants' symptoms - people in the study reported they could trust and communicate with the system to a degree that is comparable to working with a mental health professional. The study showed that AI has the potential to provide real-time support for the many people who lack regular or immediate access to a mental health professional. While there is no replacement for in-person care, there are nowhere near enough providers available - generative AI could help the huge number of people outside of the in-person care system.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a new open source software layer that can connect large language models to domain specific software. A broad set of companies have announced support for MCP. Middleware never quite lives up to its promises in practice. Over time, the negatives of either being easily replaced or having user experience and feature innovations ignored end up making the commitment to middleware look like a poor investment.

THE GEN X CAREER MELTDOWN

Those who entered media or image-making in the 90s are probably now doing something else for work because those industries have shrunk or transformed radically, shutting out those whose skills were once in high demand. People who once imagined they would be able to have a solid career while flexing their creative muscles have seen their work dry up over the past few decades as digital technology began seeping into their lives. Many in Generation X now find themselves shut out economically and culturally from their chosen fields. The shedding of jobs and upending of longstanding business models has come at a bad time, with the cost of living skyrocketing.

OPEN SOURCE DEVS ARE FIGHTING AI CRAWLERS WITH CLEVERNESS AND VENGEANCE

Sites hosting free and open source projects share most of their infrastructure publicly, so they tend to have fewer resources than commercial products. Many AI bots don't honor the Robots Exclusion Protocol robot.txt file, hide behind other IP addresses, and pretend to be other users, making it difficult to block them. Anubis is a reverse proxy proof-of-work check that must be passed before requests are allowed to hit a server - it blocks bots but lets through browsers operated by humans. It has been popular among the FOSS community as many projects are experiencing the same issue.

Right now, code is capital, but going forward, the true capital asset will be big models and chips - things that you can finance and rent. We are now solidly in the agent S-curve - this will change how we think about software businesses and their profit potential.

APPLE NEEDS A SNOW SEQUOIA

Snow Leopard improved the underlying system while shrinking it in size. Apple's latest releases are screaming for such a reset - they feel like software developed by people who don't actually use that software. Snow Leopard's clean-up paved the way for years of solid, reliable upgrades - spring cleaning would make the Mac, iPhone, and iPad really shine.
