WORKING WITH LLMS: A FEW LESSONS

Large Language Models (LLMs) are inherently probabilistic, which means you have to add evaluation frameworks, human-in-the-loop processes, and design for graceful failure, using LLMs for probabilistic guidance rather than deterministic answers. Unlike with traditional software, there is no way to get better at using AI than using AI - there is no substitute for trial and error. This makes it hard to predict development and makes building future-proof technology almost impossible. While software is inexpensive to distribute once written, LLMs have continued costs.

GOOGLE IS FINALLY BUILDING ITS OWN DEX: FIRST LOOK AT ANDROID'S DESKTOP MODE

Google is developing its own Samsung DeX-like desktop mode for Android. Samsung DeX is a software feature that emulates a desktop UI that presents a desktop-like interface, allowing users to launch multiple apps in floating windows and control everything with a keyboard and mouse. The feature is still unfinished and almost certainly won't launch by the release of Android 16. This article presents a preview of the new desktop mode.

APPS LIKE KINDLE ARE ALREADY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF COURT-MANDATED IOS APP STORE CHANGES

Amazon's Kindle app for iPhones and iPads wouldn't actually let anyone buy books in the app, until yesterday. The iOS app still doesn't allow books to be purchased directly in the app, but users can search Amazon's virtual bookstore inside the app and tap a new button that automatically pops them over to Amazon's website. Apple plans to appeal the ruling to allow third-party developers to use alternate payment processors in their apps - if successful, it could create new potential PR headaches for Apple as the company would then be taking away something from developers and users rather than preserving the status quo.

THE COMPANY WITH THE WORLD'S LARGEST AIRCRAFT NOW HAS A HYPERSONIC ROCKET PLANE

Stratolaunch's Talon-A2 reusable hypersonic rocket plane has already carried multiple experiments and delivered payloads. The company is aiming for monthly flights by the end of the year and eventually wants to ramp up to weekly flights. The Pentagon has spent about $12 billion on hypersonic weapons development and testing since 2018 - none of the weapons are operational yet. China's first hypersonic weapon became operational in 2019, and Russia's government claimed it deployed a hypersonic weapon in the same year. The Pentagon's hunger for hypersonic weapons will likely fund Stratolaunch for some time to come.

However, making that determination is complex, and the drug's effects could have different outcomes depending on the sport.

GOOGLE ACCIDENTALLY REVEALS ANDROID'S MATERIAL 3 EXPRESSIVE INTERFACE AHEAD OF I/O

Google's next version of Android might look quite different. The company recently published and quickly removed a blog post that detailed 'Material 3 Expressive', a redesign expected to be revealed at I/O later this month. While the original Material Design did a good job of leveraging colors and consistent theming, it made apps look too similar. The new interface appears much more varied. Screenshots from the deleted blog post are available in the article.

AN INTERVIEW WITH META CEO MARK ZUCKERBERG ABOUT AI AND THE EVOLUTION OF SOCIAL MEDIA

This is a transcript of an interview with Mark Zuckerberg where he discusses the broader themes that place Llama in Meta's historical context. The interview covers Meta's platform ambitions over the last two decades, the evolution of social networking, and how Zuckerberg has changed his thinking about both. Zuckerberg talks about the Llama API and the tension between GPU opportunity cost and leveraging training costs, and why he thinks that the latter is worth paying for. He also discusses why Meta AI may actually bring many of his oldest ideas full circle, how that ties into Reality Labs, and why Meta ended up being the perfect name for the company.

I'D RATHER READ THE PROMPT

People shouldn't let computers write for them. Their original thoughts are far more interesting, meaningful, and valuable than whatever a large language model can transform them into. Writing should be a medium for communicating original thoughts - if it's not worth writing, it's not worth reading. Language models are great for making nonsense and not so great for anything else - it's probably better to just read the prompt.

WELCOME TO STARBASE: TEXAS HAS A NEW CITY HOME TO ELON MUSK'S SPACEX

A vote to decide whether to turn part of south Texas into a new city centered around Elon Musk's SpaceX passed with broad support, paving the way for a newly incorporated city made up almost exclusively of SpaceX employees and people connected to the company. The brand-new city, Starbase, covers about one and a half square miles at the southern tip of Texas in a coastal spot nestled against the Mexico border. It is home to SpaceX headquarters and where the company builds its boosters and engines and launches its Starship rocket on test flights. Having greater municipal control of the area could ease some of the bureaucracy and restrictions around SpaceX's tests and rocket launches.

ERIC SCHMIDT APPARENTLY BOUGHT RELATIVITY SPACE TO PUT DATA CENTERS IN ORBIT

Eric Schmidt acquired Relativity Space to have the capability to launch a significant amount of computing infrastructure into space. Schmidt appeared before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce during a hearing in April and spoke about the need for more electricity to power data centers to facilitate the computing needs for AI development and applications. Space-based data centers would be powered by solar panels and be able to radiate heat into the vacuum of space. Relativity's Terran R will be capable of launching 33.5 metric tons to low-Earth orbit in expendable mode and 23.5 tons with a reusable first stage.

WORLD FIRST: JAPAN CLAIMS NEW DRONE CAN INDUCE LIGHTNING STRIKES

Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone group claims to have created a drone that can induce and guide lightning strikes. The technology could theoretically be used to protect cities and infrastructure from lightning damage. A wire is attached to the drone - when a switch is flicked, a surge of electrical energy runs through the wire, grounding the drone electrically. This allegedly increases the strength of the drone's surrounding electric field, triggering and attracting a lightning strike. A video that explains how the technology works is available in the article.

AFTER 856 'SNAKE BITES', MAN'S BLOOD COULD UNLOCK UNIVERSAL ANTIVENOM

Venom expert Tim Friede has voluntarily injected himself with snake venom 856 times across 18 years. This has led to the creation of the most widely effective snake antivenom on record. The antivenom protected mice from the venom of 19 different snake species in lab experiments. Rigorous clinical testing is required before the antivenom will be made available to humans. The researchers plan to conduct field trials of the antivenom to treat snake-bitten dogs in Australia.
