BUILDING MVPS YOU WON’T HATE

The "food truck approach" is a strategy for building scalable and effective MVPs. The strategy emphasizes focusing on core product features (like the grill) while carefully selecting supporting technologies (like frames, wheels, and the engine) and establishing feedback loops. Engineers play an important role in making technology easy to understand for non-technical members of the team.

THE 2038 PROBLEM

Most Unix systems use a 32-bit signed integer to represent the number of seconds since January 1st, 1970. A 32-bit variable can only store integers up to 2147483647. Once system clocks tick past this at 03:14:07 UTC on January 19, 2038, their 32-bit signed integers will overflow to -(2^31) - this is the root of the “Year 2038 problem.”

YOU CAN NOT SIMPLY PUBLICLY ACCESS PRIVATE SECURE LINKS, CAN YOU?

Popular malware analysis tools often store sensitive private links due to misconfigured tools and users mistakenly submitting private content. These links can expose confidential files, smart home recordings, corporate communications, and more. Users should be aware of this issue and ensure scans are marked 'private' when sensitive data is involved.

AUTOGENERATING A BOOK SERIES FROM THREE YEARS OF IMESSAGES

This author wanted to physically browse their iMessage history, which is difficult with Apple's interface. They found that iPhone backups contain an 'sms.db' SQLite database with messages. Using SQL queries, they were able to retrieve their messages. They then generated LaTeX code to create a paperback book from their messages.

THE HATER’S GUIDE TO KUBERNETES

Kubernetes can bring great value to companies, but it's easy to fall into the trap of over-complicating its usage. For a streamlined approach, focus on core Kubernetes features like Deployments, Services, and CronJobs. Use Kubernetes to run multiple redundant processes with load balancing and to configure them as code. Avoid Kubernetes for use cases where a human is waiting on a pod to start or for directly storing critical data, as there are better-suited solutions for these scenarios.

HOW GITHUB USES MERGE QUEUE TO SHIP HUNDREDS OF CHANGES EVERY DAY

GitHub developed “merge queue” to provide a streamlined, automated, and consistent method for deploying and merging code across its repositories. Merge queue's key features include dynamic grouping of pull requests, automatic conflict detection, and integration with GitHub Actions for testing. After a phased rollout, merge queue is now the primary way GitHub engineers ship code, leading to better deployment velocity and developer satisfaction.

THE MOST IMPORTANT GOAL IN DESIGNING SOFTWARE IS UNDERSTANDABILITY

The most fundamental goal of software design is to make code understandable. Understandable code is needed for correctness, security, and performance, as a lack of understanding leads to defects, security issues, and misguided performance optimizations. Focusing on understandability means making the code itself readable and providing supporting documentation to clarify complex concepts or system architecture.

THE END OF AIRPLANE.DEV

Airplane, an internal tooling startup, was acquired by Airtable, who plans to shut down the product. Despite a healthy runway and happy customers, the acquisition was likely driven by the CEO's desire for a less stressful role rather than any fundamental problems with the company. Employees were given strong but not outstanding offers at Airtable with short deadlines and no severance if they declined. Ultimately, the outcome was disappointing to its employees, since the product was abandoned and strong customer relationships were damaged in the process.

FONTS ARE STILL A HELVETICA OF A PROBLEM

Canva's team found security risks in popular font-handling tools. For example, they found an XML vulnerability in FontTools, where the application’s SVG font subsetting feature could be exploited to allow hackers to read arbitrary files. To prevent such issues, Canva treats fonts as untrusted inputs, sandboxes font processing, uses sanitization, and collaborates with open-source maintainers by providing security patches.

FEATURE FLAGS ARE RUINING YOUR CODEBASE

Feature flags are a valuable tool for separating code deployment from feature releases, but their overuse can complicate codebases and hinder testing. Too many feature flags leads to difficult testing and complex code and creates excuses for PMs to not make hard decisions like completely removing a feature. To deal with this, you should separate your feature flags into categories and deal with them differently: release toggles for merging not-ready code into production, ops toggles for features with unknown performance implications, experiment toggles for A/B tests, and permission toggles to enable different experiences for different users. Only let PMs manage the latter two and let developers remove control release and ops toggles as soon as they're done.

MODERN GIT COMMANDS AND FEATURES YOU SHOULD BE USING

Most people stick to basic Git commands. This article discusses less common but powerful Git commands. One useful command is git switch, which offers safer, more focused branch switching compared to git checkout. Another is git restore, which simplifies file restoration and replaces some uses of git reset and git checkout. For large monorepos, git sparse-checkout improves performance by checking out only specific directories. git worktree enables working on multiple branches simultaneously, removing the need for stashes or multiple repo clones.

THE "MISSING" GRAPH DATATYPE ALREADY EXISTS. IT WAS INVENTED IN THE '70S

Programming languages lack built-in graph support not because graphs are too complex, but because modern languages' imperative model makes it difficult to write graph algorithms without committing to a specific graph representation. A declarative language like Datalog, based on relational algebra, is a much more natural fit for expressing graph algorithms. Datalog's ability to optimize queries based on dataset characteristics and its expressiveness makes it both performant and easy to use for graph-related tasks.

ARRAY LANGUAGES VS. THE CURSE OF THE SPREADSHEET

Spreadsheets are widely used for data entry, computation, and presentation, but their design makes them prone to hidden errors and difficult to manage as complexity grows. This presents an opportunity for array programming languages, which offer a more reliable and expressive way to perform complex calculations. The Kap array programming language aims to bridge the gap between spreadsheets and traditional programming, providing a familiar spreadsheet-like interface for data entry and presentation while using an actual programming language for computation.

CRACKING META’S MESSENGER CERTIFICATE PINNING ON MACOS

Meta's Messenger app for macOS uses certificate pinning to prevent users from easily analyzing network requests sent to Meta's servers. Using the Hopper disassembler, this author identifies a key function (IsUsingSandbox()) that controls certificate pinning behavior. By modifying a few bytes within the Messenger binary to force this function to return "true", the author is able to effectively disable certificate pinning and successfully intercept network traffic for analysis.
