THE SECRET TO BETTER AIRPLANE NAVIGATION COULD BE INSIDE THE EARTH'S CRUST

Airbus' Acubed and Google spinout SandboxAQ are developing an alternative to GPS. Its quantum sensing technology is now inching closer to commercialization. The MagNav quantum-sensing device uses quantum physics to measure the unique magnetic signatures at various points in the Earth's crust. An AI algorithm is then used to match those signatures to an exact location. The technology could be a promising alternative to GPS in a time when GPS jamming and spoofing are on the rise.

NIST ION CLOCK SETS NEW RECORD FOR MOST ACCURATE CLOCK IN THE WORLD

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have improved their atomic clock so it can perform timekeeping with 19 decimal places of accuracy. The aluminum ion clock is 2.6 times more stable than any other ion clock. Its accuracy will help facilitate new scientific and technological advances, allowing scientists to explore new concepts in quantum physics and build the tools needed for quantum technology. It could help physicists explore physics beyond the Standard Model, such as the possibility that the fundamental constants of nature are not fixed values but actually changing.

TO BE A BETTER PROGRAMMER, WRITE LITTLE PROOFS IN YOUR HEAD

One trick that helps developers write code faster and more accurately is to sketch proofs in your head when you're working on something difficult. Doing this without interrupting flow takes a lot of practice, but once you get good at it, you'll find a surprising amount of code will work on the first or second try. This article demonstrates a few examples of how this technique can be applied.

THE HALO EFFECT

A new type of deal structure has emerged in AI as an alternative to acquisitions and hiring. It involves hiring the core team from a startup and gaining a non-exclusive license to the startup's intellectual property in exchange for substantial licensing fees, which are distributed as dividends out to investors and employees. These startups then continue to operate under new leadership. These 'Hire And License Out' (HALO) deals are still new and remain poorly understood.

META'S NEW SUPERINTELLIGENCE LAB IS DISCUSSING MAJOR A.I. STRATEGY CHANGES

A small group of members in Meta's newly formed superintelligence lab last week discussed the possibility of abandoning the company's most powerful open source AI model, Behemoth, in favor of developing a closed model. Meta has chosen to open source its AI models for years, with executives arguing that it is better for the technology to be public to accelerate AI development and make the technology more accessible to developers. A move to a closed AI model would be a philosophical change as much as a technical one. Meta has been delaying the release of its Behemoth model due to its poor internal performance.

DARPA SETS NEW RECORD FOR WIRELESS POWER BEAMING

The United States' Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently transferred over 800 watts of power over about 30 seconds with a laser beam across 8.6 kilometers. The estimated power efficiency was around 20%. The team used commercial ready-to-use solar cells placed within a receiver to turn the laser beam into electricity. Laser technologies are more suitable than infrared for building an airborne power relay network due to their high precision, long-range reach, and lighter and smaller equipment required to work.

AWS PREVIEWS KIRO IDE FOR DEVELOPERS WHO ARE OVER VIBE CODING

AWS has introduced a new agentic IDE called Kiro that apparently avoids the pitfalls of vibe coding. It is built around a conversational interface that offers developers the chance to explain what they are trying to build. Kiro then uses generative AI to produce its response, which initially takes the form of a spec, not actual code. Kiro can handle multiple specs created by different teams that all work on different aspects of a project. It can use plugins written for VS Code and Open VSX.

TIKTOK OWNER BYTEDANCE IS REPORTEDLY BUILDING ITS OWN MIXED REALITY GOGGLES

They will be built by ByteDance's Pico, the creators of the Pico 4 VR headset. Pico will keep the device lightweight by offloading most of the computing work to a puck connected to the goggles over a wire. Current Pico headsets aren't sold in the US, and ByteDance may face pushback over a US release due to its ownership of TikTok.

A NEVER-ENDING SUPPLY OF DRONES HAS FROZEN THE FRONT LINES IN UKRAINE

Drones are dominating the battlefield in the fight for Ukraine. Both sides have hundreds of them constantly in the air across the 750-mile front line. Drones can lay mines, deliver ammunition and medication, and even evacuate wounded or dead soldiers. They are being used to spot movement along the front line and dispatched to strike enemy troops and vehicles. Drones are so cheap to make that both sides can expend them on any target, including individual soldiers. Due to their size and speed, they are difficult to shoot down, so the main defense against them has been electronic jamming systems - but these can be overcome with fiber-optic drones.

TIM COOK ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE SOON, BUT AN APPLE SHAKE-UP LOOMS

Apple's Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook is probably not going to leave anytime soon despite being mired in Apple's biggest crisis in years. Cook's longtime No. 2, Jeff Williams, just announced plans to retire, so there's no immediate successor ready to take the helm, and there haven't been signs that Cook has begun the process of grooming a replacement. The board also doesn't feel the need to make a change - while shares are down 16% this year, they've surged about 1,500% since he became CEO in 2011. While Cook is staying, the company has started a broad management shake-up - roughly half of Cook's direct reports could depart within the next few years.
