ELON MUSK TAKES AIM AT BILL GATES' MICROSOFT WITH NEW AI VENTURE “MACROHARD”

Elon Musk's new software venture, Macrohard, is a purely AI software company designed to generate hundreds of specialized coding and generative AI agents that could one day simulate products from companies like Microsoft entirely through artificial intelligence. The company appears to be closely linked to xAI's Colossus 2 supercomputer project in Memphis. Musk has confirmed plans to acquire millions of Nvidia GPUs. Colossus is already one of the most powerful supercomputer clusters in the world, and it is still being expanded.

THE NEXT STARSHIP FLIGHT WILL TEST MUCH MORE THAN HARDWARE

SpaceX has planned for a controlled splashdown for Super Heavy in the Gulf of Mexico and an Indian Ocean splashdown for Ship for the next Starship test flight. The launch window for the flight opened on August 24 at 7:30 PM, but the launch was scrubbed 30 minutes from the planned liftoff to allow time to troubleshoot an issue with ground systems. SpaceX has beach and road closures scheduled for Monday and Tuesday all day, so it is highly likely it will reattempt a launch very soon.

META'S NEW 2MM LASER DISPLAY COULD ENABLE TRUE AR GLASSES

Meta researchers have found a new use for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), chips that can receive, modulate, and direct light. Their PICs can receive RGB light from laser light sources integrated into a panel, process it, then shine light onto a liquid crystal on a silicon panel for final display. The overall complex is just two millimeters thick and has a dramatically better color gamut over similar displays. These PICs are manufactured using a CMOS-compatible process, which means they should be affordable to create at scale.

HOW WE VIBE CODE AT A FAANG

Always start with a technical design document, as this is where the bulk of the work happens. Design review before launching into the development effort, and backlog development and sprint planning. Use Test Driven Development, and have a dev approval process before code can get merged into main. Test in staging before pushing to production.

EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT GOOD API DESIGN

APIs are public interfaces for communicating with a program. Most of what modern software engineers do involves APIs. APIs are hard to build because they're inflexible, but must be easy to adopt. This is a guide on good API design that covers how to change APIs without breaking userspace, how APIs are affected by products, authentication, retries, safety, rate limiting, and much more.

The firings sent a clear message that AI isn't optional at the company. Armstrong has since leaned even further into AI training. The company hosts monthly meetings where teams that have mastered creative ways to use AI share what they have learned.

WHY GOOGLE THINKS ITS PIXEL PHONES ARE MUCH BIGGER THAN THEIR SALES NUMBERS

While Google's new Pixel lineup doesn't look too different from the previous generation, a lot has changed under the hood. The company now believes that real evolution will come from software and connected devices rather than hardware. It is already finalizing its 2026 phones and has begun work on its 2027 lineup. The Pixel's share remains small, accounting for roughly 3% of the market.

ORACLE RIDES MAJOR DEALS WITH OPENAI, NVIDIA TO TURN AROUND CLOUD BUSINESS

OpenAI is slated to become Oracle's largest customer, with the companies having struck deals for more than 5 gigawatts of computing power, an unprecedented sum. Another of Oracle's largest customers is Nvidia, which rents capacity from an Oracle cluster of H100 chips in Japan and from a data center being built in Indonesia. While Oracle's cloud business is still orders of magnitude smaller than Amazon's, there's plenty of room for growth. With all of its recent spending, Oracle recorded a negative annual cash flow for the first time since 1990. Questions about the longevity and margins of offering infrastructure to train AI models remain.

CHAN ZUCKERBERG INITIATIVE'S RBIO USES VIRTUAL CELLS TO TRAIN AI, BYPASSING LAB WORK

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, an organization established and owned by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, has launched rBio, an artificial intelligence model trained to reason about cellular biology using virtual simulations. The breakthrough has the potential to dramatically accelerate biomedical research and drug discovery. The model uses a novel approach called 'soft verification', which uses predictions from virtual cell models as training signals instead of relying solely on experimental data. The paradigm shift means researchers can test biological hypotheses computationally before committing time and resources to costly laboratory work.

ELON MUSK ASKED META CEO MARK ZUCKERBERG TO JOIN XAI BID TO BUY OPENAI, FILING SHOWS

Elon Musk asked Mark Zuckerberg to help him finance a $97.4 billion takeover of OpenAI earlier this year. Musk and xAI had approached Zuckerberg with a letter of intent, but neither Zuckerberg nor Meta signed it. The story was revealed in court filings in a legal case between Musk and OpenAI initiated last year to stop the startup from converting to a for-profit entity.

BUILDING A BETTER DATABASE TO DETECT DESIGNER DRUGS

Designer drugs replicate the effects of known, illicit drugs, but evade law enforcement. The variations in chemical structures help them avoid detection, but they also make them unpredictable in the body, which could pose serious health consequences. A research team has used computer modeling to create a database of predicted chemical structures for the improved detection of designer drugs. The database could someday be a publicly available supplement to the current illicit drug mass-spectral databases.
