ANNOUNCING AWS LAMBDA WEB FUNCTIONS

AWS Lambda Web Functions is a new form factor that runs standard HTTP web applications without rewriting code into an event handler. Developers can deploy existing Node.js servers built with frameworks like Express or Next.js, and the service automatically handles scaling and multi-region distribution. Each execution environment handles up to 128 concurrent requests, and billing is based on active CPU time rather than total duration. It is available today in five regions.

HEADLESS OBSERVABILITY: THE NEXT EVOLUTION OF AUTONOMOUS OPERATIONS

New Relic argues observability must evolve for AI agents as well as humans, since agents need trusted operational intelligence rather than raw telemetry. Its Ground Truth layer combines telemetry, relationships, evidence, and context, separating intelligence from presentation so dashboards and APIs serve both audiences.

UNDER THE HOOD, OFF THE HOT PATH: HOW D1 SCALES TO MILLIONS OF DATABASES

Cloudflare scaled D1's control plane to manage millions of SQLite-backed databases while keeping centralized components out of the query hot path. Distributed routing metadata, pooled Postgres connections, precomputed aggregations, and idempotent background processes reduce bottlenecks as database counts grow.

SHIPPING MEDIA OVER QUIC AT META SCALE FOR INSTAGRAM LIVE INGEST

Instagram Live now uses the open standard Media over QUIC (MoQ) protocol for live video ingest on iOS and Android. This switch moves development from Meta's in-house RUSH protocol to a shared IETF standard developed with Google, Akamai, and others. Meta says the MoQ path matched RUSH on streaming quality and reliability measures during testing.

WHAT GETS TOASTED IN POSTGRES

Postgres TOAST compresses oversized variable-length values and moves them into separate storage when necessary. SQL examples show why LZ4's faster compression does not always produce smaller values or faster reads: pglz can outperform it for short previews, while uncompressed external storage can improve reads from the middle of large binary values.

INSTACART CUT AVERAGE LATENCY 50% AND RUNS ON 70% FEWER NODES. HERE'S HOW

Redis was designed for single-core machines. On a modern 64-core server you end up paying for compute you can't use. Dragonfly [5] was built with a thread-per-core, shared-nothing architecture and a new hash table design that cuts memory overhead by around 40% vs. Redis's dict. 💪 You get about 6M ops/sec on a single node, so workloads fit comfortably on 1 machine. 👀 When Instacart migrated to Dragonfly it cut latency 50% [6] and now runs 70% fewer nodes. 🤝 Dragonfly speaks the Redis and Valkey wire protocol, so your existing clients and commands work unchanged.

THE KEYS TO THE INTERNET CHANGE ON OCTOBER 11. ARE YOU READY?

The DNS root is scheduled to switch to KSK-2024 on October 11, and DNSSEC-validating resolvers that lack the new trust anchor could fail to resolve otherwise healthy websites. RFC 8509 sentinel queries let operators check readiness, although an unsupported sentinel test produces an inconclusive result rather than proving the key is missing.

WHAT IS INTERACTIVE APPLICATION SECURITY TESTING (IAST)?

Interactive application security testing instruments running applications to find issues like SQL injection and XSS with fewer false positives. It suits QA and staging but needs runtime agents, adds overhead, and scales poorly across microservices, so mature programs pair it with SAST and SCA.

KUBELET WATCHES INODES. JUST NOT UNTIL IT'S AN EMERGENCY

Kubelet's background image garbage collection only monitors disk bytes, so workloads heavy on small files receive no early intervention before kubelet evicts pods. On one node, unpacked layers from a single-stage build containing the @mui/icons-material package consumed millions of inodes. A multi-stage Dockerfile can reduce the deployed image from more than 40,000 files to a few dozen. Adding a Prometheus alert for inode usage above 80% can catch the problem well before the 95% eviction threshold.
