02OPINIONS & TUTORIALS

DESIGNING FOR PEOPLE WITH ADHD

ADHD affects about 5% of people and stems from differences in how the brain develops focus, planning, and self-regulation. It is not a matter of willpower. Helpful patterns include reminders for unfinished drafts, chunked long forms, gradual disclosure of options, and visible progress, while autoplay and infinite scroll are best avoided. ADHD often overlaps with autism, dyslexia, and anxiety, so designing for it tends to help several groups at once.

A SELECT SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING

Customizable HTML selects can now include previews, secondary information, warnings, and other context that helps people recognize the right option instead of deciphering text labels. Practical examples include showing fonts in their actual typefaces, displaying current local times instead of UTC offsets, aligning delivery prices for comparison, and distinguishing people with identical names by job title and department. The technique progressively enhances the native `select`, so unsupported browsers can retain familiar controls while richer desktop experiences provide more useful information without replacing built-in semantics and keyboard behavior.

ONE SIZE DOESN'T FIT ALL: RETHINKING “GOOD DESIGN” ACROSS CULTURES

Ideas such as clarity, simplicity, restraint, and functionality are often treated as universal measures of good design even though they emerged from particular Western histories and cultural contexts. Design traditions excluded from the dominant canon can use decoration, complexity, symbolism, and craft in ways that are deeply functional within their cultures, challenging assumptions that minimalism is inherently more sophisticated or understandable. Evaluating design more broadly requires asking who established prevailing standards of taste, whose histories were documented and taught, and whether a design successfully serves its specific cultural purpose rather than conforming to a supposedly universal aesthetic.

03LAUNCHES & TOOLS

OPEN-SOURCE CAD FOR AI AGENTS

The text-to-cad plugin gives your agent local workflows for generating 3D models as STEP, GLB, STL, or 3MF files. It also does design for manufacturing checks, generates engineering drawings, and connects to popular 3D printing, sheet metal, and CNC fabrication services.

THE SOFTWARE FACTORY FORGOT ABOUT DESIGN

A four-station workflow of Linear, Paper, a coding agent, and review brings design into the software factory, where issues otherwise turn straight into pull requests. Linear holds the intent, Paper hosts agent-drafted HTML and CSS designs made before implementation, and the coding agent builds from both issue and design. Review checks the build against intent, but agents still lack the history behind decisions, such as past designs, analytics, and design-system reasoning.

THE NEW YORK TIMES TURNS 175 WITH AN IDENTITY, EVENTS AND A CAMPAIGN

The New York Times is marking its 175th anniversary with a visual identity, campaign, and program of events that use the publication's history as material rather than simply commemorating its age. Familiar elements from its editorial and typographic heritage are reframed across contemporary applications, connecting decades of journalism with the publication's current cultural role. The system demonstrates how an established institution can celebrate recognizable brand equity while giving historical assets new relevance instead of replacing them.

HOW MOTHER DESIGN TURNED A SÉANCE INTO A NEW IDENTITY FOR PURPLE GARDEN

Mother Design began Purple Garden's rebrand with a séance, chakra reading, and automatic drawing workshop, using the resulting forms and feelings to build an identity around spirituality as “A Living Practice.” A whimsical wordmark, crystal-like guidance glyph, warm purple palette, tactile imagery, living typography inspired by cymatic patterns, and expressive motion create an immersive system without relying on familiar psychic-industry clichés. The process moved between physical experimentation, traditional design software, and AI tools, deliberately introducing unpredictability into both the creative process and the finished identity.
