WEBSITES SHOULD BE PRINTABLE

Websites containing substantial text can provide a much better printed experience with a relatively small set of dedicated CSS rules. Print styles can remove navigation, introduce print-only information, resize typography, adapt code blocks, and turn colored links black so pages work better on paper. Supporting printing may be a niche requirement, but it reflects a broader approach to good software in which small, thoughtful accommodations give users more ways to experience content.

HALF MY DESIGN SYSTEM METRICS DON'T WORK ANYMORE

Traditional design system metrics such as total component counts, downloads, MCP calls, and self-reported agent success reveal little about whether a system actually produces better work. More useful measures include conformance, accessibility, design-code parity, hard-coded values, component friction, agent adherence, cost per shippable output, and how quickly humans and agents can successfully build with the system. As AI agents become design system users, teams also need repeatable evals that give models real tasks and score their output against intended design principles, implementation rules, and visual quality.

YOUR PRODUCT IS NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE

Established products still assume they sit at the center of users' workflows, a model nearing its end as personal agents work across many tools at once. In its place, products show up wherever the user's agent works, expose their capabilities to any agent, and rely on its memory. In-conversation UI, domain expertise, proprietary data, and fulfillment like hosting, shipping, and payments keep them from becoming commodities.

FONT PAIRINGS 2026: WE CHECKED THE FONTS ON 2,190 WEBSITES DESIGNERS LOVED. MOST OF THEM USED JUST ONE

An analysis of 2,190 design-gallery websites found that 60% use the same typeface for headlines and body copy, relying on differences in scale, spacing, and weight rather than traditional font pairings. Among the 871 sites using two families, there were 811 different combinations, while Inter was the most common overall typeface, PP Neue Montreal led paid options, and monospace fonts frequently appeared as a third family for labels and small text. The data suggests contemporary web typography is increasingly defined by craft within a small number of families, with regular-weight, tightly tracked large headlines and carefully controlled spacing doing more visual work than elaborate pairings.

EAST SURREY COUNCIL REVEALS IN-HOUSE BRAND IDENTITY AHEAD OF 2027 LAUNCH

East Surrey Council's new identity was developed entirely in-house by designers from six local authorities at no additional cost to taxpayers ahead of the authority's April 2027 launch. The selected mark uses layered leaf-like forms to reference the region's contours and countryside while hiding a lowercase “e,” with colors representing woodland, countryside, community, waterways, and heritage, and Lexend providing accessible primary typography. The identity will be introduced gradually as existing signage, vehicles, and other assets reach scheduled replacement points, minimizing waste and transition costs.

EVERYONE IS STARTING OVER

Designers at every career stage are effectively starting over, as tools, expectations, and team structures shift fast enough to turn old strengths into liabilities. Reinvention is a habit that demands tolerance for embarrassment. Critical thinking is its counterweight - test each new idea so openness to change never means becoming easy to fool.
