02OPINIONS & TUTORIALS

THE NEW AGE OF SOFTWARE

Much software remains unbuilt for construction, manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, and healthcare administration, which still run on spreadsheets, paper forms, and systems installed around 1999. Best-paid designers and engineers went to social and ad networks, leaving industries too small, unsexy, or expensive for traditional software economics. Small teams can now build specialized tools in months and proofs of concept in days, and falling switching costs loosen vendor lock-in from legacy enterprise software.

HOW META LETS DESIGNERS PROTOTYPE WITH AI IN FORUM

Meta's designers prototyped Forum, its standalone Facebook Groups app, with AI in a separate experimental build that used production components and excluded prototype code from release. The sandbox drew on the production codebase, frameworks, and design system, so approved work transferred without rebuilding from scratch. Agents ran build checks, automated tests, and visual comparisons before engineering review, and every shipped change required an engineer's approval.

YOU CAN'T HILL CLIMB YOUR WAY TO "GOOD EXPERIENCE"

Coding agents excel when success can be evaluated with deterministic tests, but good user experience cannot be reduced to a metric that can simply be optimized upward. Interfaces depend on nonlinear relationships between hierarchy, wording, context, attention, expectations, and human limitations, meaning hundreds of individually reasonable changes may still produce something confusing. AI can test whether an interface technically works, but its ability to read everything and perceive a whole page at once makes it a poor substitute for the distracted, imperfect humans who actually need to use it.

FAST IS A DESIGN DECISION

AI has made websites dramatically easier to build, but generated experiences can still impose substantial costs on users through slow servers, excessive JavaScript, poorly prioritized media, ineffective caching, and other performance problems. Many of those costs originate in design decisions such as autoplaying video, multiple font weights, media-heavy carousels, and animations, making performance something designers should actively budget rather than leave entirely to engineers. Understanding a few fundamentals around rendering, CDNs, caching, loading priority, JavaScript, and real-world device performance lets designers and AI agents make deliberate tradeoffs between visual ambition and speed.

SUNLIFE'S NEW LOGO DESIGN IS "OPTIMIZED FOR A DIGITAL WORLD", BUT DOES IT TAKE MINIMALISM TOO FAR?

Canadian financial services company Sunlife has dramatically simplified its 25-year-old identity, turning Sun Life into a single word and reducing its detailed sun symbol to a simple yellow disc. The redesign aims to create a more contemporary, consistent identity optimized for digital environments while reflecting the company's expansion beyond life insurance into health, asset management, and other services. Its extreme simplicity has renewed debate around branding minimalism, with the lighter serif wordmark retaining some distinction while the stripped-back symbol risks the homogeneity associated with “blanding.”
