FIRST AI CAME AND SCOOPED UP YOUR ART. NOW IT'S SCOOPED UP ADOBE

ArtCraft is a two-person GitHub project that appears to use AI-generated code to recreate large parts of Adobe's Creative Cloud functionality, including alternatives to Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, and Premiere. Its rapid development demonstrates how AI coding tools could allow tiny teams to reproduce increasingly sophisticated professional software that previously required huge organizations to build. The development creates an ironic reversal for Adobe, whose own embrace of generative AI has faced criticism from creatives concerned about AI systems reproducing their work.

HANDLE TOKEN EXCEPTIONS

Hardcoded values become valid token exceptions only with a reason, a defined scope, an owner, and an end date. Without a date, they're permanent technical debt. Valid cases include time-boxed campaigns, tokens awaiting release, and urgent accessibility fixes. A register tracks each exception's location, value, reason, approver, and expiration date, and when the date arrives, it's promoted to a token or removed.

THE NEW BIG BALL OF MUD: WHY AGENTIC AI SYSTEMS TURN FRAGILE

With AI making building nearly free, vibe architects without technical backgrounds grow agentic systems piecemeal into fragile "big balls of mud." Study participants kept throwaway drafts, bolted-on features, and let the AI patch files until they could no longer locate or recreate their own systems. Keeping global, local, and ambient context separate lets builders direct a rebuild instead of relying on the AI as sole navigator.

ON GIVING FLUID INTERFACES AN ANCHOR

Interfaces that continuously reshape themselves in response to context, AI, or user intent risk becoming difficult to understand because people lose the stable landmarks they use to build a mental model of a product. Keeping frequently used action buttons anchored while content expands gives users a predictable place to click or tap as the interface changes. Fluid interfaces therefore work best when adaptability is balanced with enough permanence for users to understand where they are, what changed, and how to get back.

DESIGNING MICHELANGELUS

Michelangelus is a new serif typeface inspired by Michelangelo's handwritten manuscripts, architectural work, and carved inscriptions, created by Studiogusto for the 400th anniversary of the consecration of St. Peter's Basilica. Rather than reproducing his handwriting literally, the designers studied its rhythm, spacing, proportions, distinctive forms, and hidden structural order, even spending a week refining the lowercase “g” derived from his signature. The resulting family contains more than 2,000 glyphs across regular, italic, bold, and bold italic styles and will become available across Microsoft 365 later this year.

WHY ICON CONSISTENCY IS HARDER THAN IT LOOKS

Ten small decisions, from stroke weight and spacing to perspective and optical corrections, keep the thousandth icon in a set looking drawn by the same hand. Expressive styles bring more rules and more room for inconsistency. When strict rules hurt recognition, legibility wins, which is why the Sharp style keeps a few curves.
