ACCESSIBLE COLORS DON'T EXIST

No single color can be accessible, because contrast is a property of two colors together rather than of one. WCAG asks for 4.5:1 on regular text and 3:1 on large text and UI components, so a bright yellow fails on white yet works on dark. Brands should hand designers a palette of pre-approved color combinations with sufficient contrast instead of chasing an accessible color.

Every feature, control, mode, and exception competes for a team's finite attention, so limiting the number of details is what makes perfecting each one possible. The original iPod concentrated a thousand songs into one scroll wheel, while the Porsche 918's touchscreen reportedly controlled more than 800 functions. Software accumulates because another button is essentially free. Volkswagen has admitted that deleting physical buttons was a mistake.

A modular type scale can be computed directly from a base size and ratio using CSS pow(), instead of chaining each step from the previous one. Negative steps quickly generate unreadable sizes, such as 5.6px three steps below a 1.2rem base. Defining Heading, Body, and Detail categories with a minimum base size and only positive exponents keeps every generated size accessible.
