Research suggests that human thought is not purely linguistic. More brain regions light up than just the areas associated with language when we are thinking. Language may be how we communicate about the world, but our thoughts seem to draw on many other areas outside of the brain's language networks. AI's ability to translate effectively means that it can understand, in some sense.
