Career growth can be viewed as a nine-stage ladder: execution, efficiency, collaboration, visibility, anticipation, ownership, foresight, prioritization, and direction. Each stage builds on the one before it. The key measure of progress is how many responsibilities your manager no longer needs to handle, from checking your work and tracking status to managing risks, setting priorities, and ultimately defining goals. High performers advance by steadily removing work from their manager's plate, while many people plateau at intermediate stages such as efficiency or collaboration without realizing it.
