A new crop of companies has developed nuclear reactor designs that they claim to be cheaper, safer, and easier to build than the ones currently in operation. However, it will take many years before these technologies will meaningfully contribute to the US energy supply. This means that the country will have to rely on much older technology until the new plants come online.
