Inheritance was initially invented in Simula as a performance optimization, not for code reuse or extensibility. The Simula language creators wanted to simplify their garbage collector and efficiently implement intrusive lists. Their garbage collector had limitations that were solved by banning certain function calls, which resulted in reducing the expressiveness of the language.
