File handling in software is surprisingly complex and error-prone. Seemingly simple file operations can lead to data corruption due to non-atomic operations, reordering, and inconsistent behavior across different filesystems and operating system modes. Numerous studies show high rates of error handling failures in both file APIs and filesystems and that disk hardware failure rates are significantly higher than advertised.
