THE PUZZLE OF HOW LARGE-SCALE ORDER EMERGES IN COMPLEX SYSTEMS

Summary from the TLDR Web Dev newsletter

This article explores the puzzle of how large-scale order emerges from complex systems, a phenomenon known as emergence. Researchers are developing a framework to understand this, suggesting that emergence arises through a hierarchical structure of independent levels, akin to "software" running on the natural world. This framework uses computational mechanics to identify criteria for emergent systems, analyzing them across different scales, from neural networks to urban landscapes.
