WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH FREE FONTS AND WHEN CAN YOU USE THEM? WE ASKED ITF, MONOTYPE, AND COTYPE
Summary from the TLDR Design newsletter
There are five classifications of free fonts: Open-source fonts, open-source fonts with commercial use limitations, system fonts, fonts from subscription-based services, and fonts from free trials. Designers may offer their typefaces for free to showcase their work, ensure wide recognition, or aid fellow designers with budget constraints. However, balancing financial gain with a larger sense of responsibility to the design community is essential.
