The internet both fragments and concentrates attention. Networks are subject to powerful feedback loops. Algorithms can boost or dampen social signals. This results in a distribution of consumption where there are a few massive hits but a lot of randomness in the middle. While this means that there will likely always be big hits, the cost of producing one is increasing.
